In 1Corinthians 12: the apostle Paul writes to the brethren at Corinth and tells them that after they had been given the gift of the Holy Spirit that God would give specific spiritual gifts to all of His people. In that process of explaining this he uses an analogy for the Church, that of being a body. He talks about how we are to use those gifts in our efforts to preach the gospel and to grow in these gifts so we can effectively serve and build up one another. He wanted to make them aware of these spiritual gifts and to use them in a way to bring us closer to God and to each other so the Church would be unified.
